How to Lower Credit Card Processing Fees for Your Restaurant

Card processing fees can quietly take 2–3% of every sale you make. There are five practical ways to bring that number down — and one of them moves most of it to card payers.

Card processing is usually a restaurant's biggest technology cost. The five tactics below can lower it — how much depends on your card mix, ticket size, and current contract. Start by checking your effective rate (total fees ÷ card volume) on a recent statement.

    1. Switch to Cash Discount mode

In Cash Discount mode, the posted menu price is the card price, and guests who pay cash receive a discount at the register. The cash and card prices are shown at the register and on the receipt.

Cash discounts are allowed under federal law (the Durbin Amendment); card-network and state rules on signage and pricing still apply. PalomaPOS includes the signage and handles the math.

    2. Move to interchange-plus pricing

If Cash Discount isn't a fit (some businesses prefer to pay the fees themselves), the next-best option is to move from flat-rate pricing to interchange-plus pricing — where you pay the actual wholesale interchange cost plus a fixed markup.

Depending on your card mix, interchange-plus can lower your effective rate compared with flat-rate pricing — compare written quotes against your current statement.

    3. Eliminate hidden fees

Most restaurant POS systems sneak in extra charges:

    • PCI compliance fees: $5–$25/mo
    • Statement fees: $5–$15/mo
    • Batch fees: $0.20–$0.30/day
    • Non-qualified tier surcharges: 0.5%–2% on certain card types
    • Hardware lease: $50–$200/mo

These can add up to $100–$300+/month. Ask any provider, including PalomaPOS, for a written quote that lists every fee.

    4. Optimize your card mix (BIN routing & EMV)

Different card types cost different amounts. Rewards and corporate cards cost more in interchange than basic debit. A modern POS routes transactions to the cheapest possible network path automatically (a feature called BIN routing).

Also: ensure every terminal is processing as EMV (chip-card) when possible — keyed-in or magstripe transactions cost more and shift fraud liability to you.

    5. Renegotiate your existing contract

If switching feels disruptive, call your current processor and ask for a rate review. Operators rarely do this and processors rarely volunteer it. Bring a competing quote and ask them to match — some will lower the rate to keep you.

Caveat: this only addresses the percentage. It won't remove statement, PCI, batch, or hardware-lease fees — compare total cost, not just the rate.

    Putting it together

For context, an operator at $40K/month in card volume paying 2.6% + $0.10 with a $20 average ticket pays about $1,240/month in processing. Start with your own effective rate in our effective rate calculator, then send us your statement — a person reads it and replies with a written quote.

    FAQ

Is it legal to charge customers a fee for using a credit card?

That is a surcharge: a fee added to card payments. Surcharging is restricted in some states and capped by card networks. A cash discount is different — the posted price is the card price and guests who pay cash get a discount — and cash discounts are allowed under federal law. Check the rules where you operate — this is general information, not legal advice.

Will Cash Discount upset my customers?

It depends on your guests. Clear signage and a visible cash price help: guests see exactly what they pay and can choose cash for the lower price.

Can I lower my Square rate without switching?

Ask Square which options your account has. Otherwise, compare a written quote for your volume against what you pay today — a person at PalomaPOS reviews your statement for free.

When will I see the effect on my statement?

Your first full monthly statement after the change shows it. Compare its effective rate (total fees ÷ card volume) with the month before.
